Abortion: Candidate Stance

Abortion is a huge topic and one of the defining issues that individuals will vote for or against a candidate. The topic of abortion is usually referenced with the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade. I've actually heard the term Roe v. Wade mentioned all my life, but actually never really knew what it meant until recently. For those of you who were/are also in my situation let me give you a summary of this historic decision.

Roe v. Wade is a controversial United States Supreme Court case that resulted in a landmark decision regarding abortion. The decision overturned all state and federal laws outlawing or restricting abortion that were inconsistent with its holdings. The central holding of Roe v. Wade was that abortions are permissible for any reason a woman chooses, up until the "point at which the fetus becomes 'viable,' that is, potentially able to live outside the mother's womb, albeit with artificial aid. Viability is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks) but may occur earlier, even at 24 weeks." Now let's see what he candidate believes about abortion (source).

Barack Obama: On his website I quote, "Barack Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women’s rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case."

John McCain: On his website I quote, "John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench. Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat."

Here's a YouTube video clip of Obama and McCain on abortion 8/16/2008 at Saddleback Church moderated by Pastor Rick Warren.

As a first time new father, the thought of having an abortion done when my wife was 7 months along absolutely sickens me. It sickens my wife. Our baby was full of life and had been since conception. I truly believe that and as such I side with John McCain. My belief also stems from my religious upbringing. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a masterful document on the origin of man by the First Presidency of the Church, which at the time was Joseph F. Smith, John R. Winder, and Anthon H. Lund appears to bear out the concept that the eternal spirit enters the body prior to a normal birth. It states: "The body of man enters upon its career as a tiny germ or embryo, which becomes an infant quickened at a certain stage by the spirit whose tabernacle it is, and the child, after being born, develops into a man." (Man: His Origin and Destiny, p. 354.) Abortion after conception is considered murder in mine eyes and the decision of Roe v. Wade should be overturned.

Think about Bible times there have been two major event when Satan has gone after the children. The time of Moses when Pharaoh when he commanded all the children to be killed because of the prophecy that a deliverer would be born to save the children of Israel. The second time at the time when Christ was born of Mary. Herod also commanded that all the children be killed due to a similar prophecy. Now in our time, the dispensation of the fullness of times, Satan is going after the children through abortion and millions and millions of unborn, full of life children are being slain. Worldwide there are approximately 42 million abortions per year, that's 115,000 per day. Just in the United States there are approximately 1.37 million abortions per year (source). Tens of millions of murders each year. What are your thoughts?

This makes me so, so sad. There are so many wonderful families who can not have children and would love the oppotunity to raise a child from birth. To destroy a life, for the sake of the pregnancy being an inconvenience to the mother, is wrong and sick.
